Emerging as a heated rivalry in the modern era, the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka battle resumes in a must-win league stage encounter of the ICC World Cup 2023 on Monday (October 30) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

The two subcontinental rivals collide in Pune with a win necessary to keep their diminishing semifinal hopes alive. Both are coming on the back of superlative triumphs against Pakistan and England and require another victory to stay put in the knock-outs contention.

NRR separating the two sides despite a 2-3 win/loss record from five matches apiece, Sri Lanka are placed fifth and Afghanistan seventh in the ten-team competition. A victory here would give them contrasting spots and allow them to breathe a touch easier in their quest to bag one of the top 4 berths.

With Afghanistan's rise coinciding by the decline of Sri Lanka at the international stage, the two nations' rivalry has over time produced some of the most interesting encounters in One-Day Internationals.

Afghanistan have regularly tested and even defeated the Lankan Lions multiple times in the 50-over format, winning on three occasions from 11 matches previously contested by the two sides.
