As the curtain falls on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, a season marked by unprecedented high scores and a flurry of shattered records, it's time to reflect not just on those who soared but also on those who stumbled.

While the pitches turned out to be a  batter's paradise, facilitating a staggering total of 1260 sixes—the highest in any single IPL season—some seasoned players shockingly failed to harness the favourable conditions.

In a tournament where both international and domestic players otherwise stepped up spectacularly, a few notable names fell surprisingly short of the lofty expectations set by their past performances and pre-season hype.

At OneCricket, we take a look at the players who found themselves adrift in a sea of runs, wickets, and celebrations, unable to contribute significantly to their teams’ quests for victory in IPL 2024.

Hardik Pandya - Mumbai Indians

Stepping into the captain's shoes with high hopes, Hardik Pandya faced an abysmal season. Tasked with leading Mumbai Indians, his performance with both bat and ball left fans wanting more.

In 14 matches, Hardik managed only 216 runs at a modest average of 18.00, while his strike rate of 143.05 couldn't mask the lack of big scores. With the ball, he took 11 wickets but was costly, leaking runs at an economy rate of 10.75. His underwhelming performance was a key factor in Mumbai Indians' wooden spoon finish.

Ajinkya Rahane - Chennai Super Kings

Expected to be a linchpin at the top of the order, Ajinkya Rahane's blade didn't do the talking this season. Playing 13 matches, he scraped together 242 runs at an average of 20.16, with a strike rate of 123.46, numbers that are not expected from a player of his calibre. His failure to set the stage led to a top-order crumble for CSK, resulting in their exit before the playoffs.

Glenn Maxwell - Royal Challengers Bengaluru

After a stellar World Cup performance in 2023, expectations were sky-high for Glenn Maxwell. However, the 'Big Show' turned into a no-show this IPL season.

Scoring a paltry 52 runs across 10 matches at an average of 5.78, Maxwell's season was nothing short of a nightmare. His strike rate of 120.93 was uncharacteristic, and his golden duck in the Eliminator was the final nail in the coffin for RCB's campaign.

Quinton de Kock - Lucknow Super Giants

Quinton de Kock was supposed to be a cornerstone for LSG's batting alongside KL Rahul, but his campaign never took off. Accumulating 250 runs in 11 matches at an average of 22.73 and a strike rate of 134.41, de Kock's lacklustre performance left a gaping hole in LSG's strategy.

His inability to provide solid starts contributed significantly to LSG missing out on the playoffs for the first time.

Rinku Singh - Kolkata Knight Riders

Despite coming off a breakthrough season, Rinku Singh's performance in IPL 2024 was underwhelming. In 14 matches, he scraped together only 168 runs at a disappointing average of 18.97, although his strike rate was a respectable 148.67.

Rinku's struggle for form was accentuated by limited opportunities at the crease, where he failed to capitalize effectively. His dip in performance might also have been influenced by his exclusion from India's squad for the T20 World Cup, a setback that seemed to linger over his season, preventing him from meeting the high expectations set by his previous year's achievements.

Rashid Khan - Gujarat Titans

Known for his magical spells, Rashid Khan had a season he'd rather forget. Over 12 matches, he bagged only 10 wickets at an inflated average of 36.70 and an economy rate of 8.40.

His struggles to clinch crucial middle-over wickets played a big role in Gujarat Titans' disappointing finish at eighth place. Expectations from Rashid to step up after Hardik's departure turned out to be lacklustre, leaving the team's aspirations in tatters.

Anrich Nortje - Delhi Capitals

Tasked with spearheading Delhi Capitals' attack, Anrich Nortje found himself out of sorts this season. In six outings, he claimed a mere 7 wickets at a bowling average of 42.00, while haemorrhaging runs at an economy rate of 13.36. His inability to strike or contain the runs saw him benched as DC concluded their campaign in sixth place.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar - Sunrisers Hyderabad

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, entrusted with leading Sunrisers Hyderabad's pace attack, faced a challenging season. He managed to claim only 11 wickets in 16 matches, recording an average of 48.45 and an economy rate of 9.35—his worst in an IPL season.

As a seasoned bowler, much was expected from Bhuvneshwar, especially with potential implications for his return to the India squad. Unfortunately, his performance fell flat, failing to ignite his campaign.

Liam Livingstone - Punjab Kings

Liam Livingstone, who had previously excelled as Punjab Kings' dynamic finisher, endured a forgettable season. Over 7 matches, he mustered just 111 runs at an average of 22.20 and a strike rate of 142.31, which starkly contrasted with his career IPL strike rate.

Livingstone's form slump had a direct impact on PBKS's lower-order firepower, contributing to critical losses in games that could have been won with more effective finishing.

Dhruv Jurel - Rajasthan Royals

Dhruv Jurel entered IPL 2024 riding high on expectations after showcasing his potential in the previous season and making his Test debut for India. However, he couldn't replicate his form, managing only 195 runs in 14 matches at an average of 24.38 and a strike rate of 138.30.

Jurel's inability to perform in crucial moments meant that Rajasthan Royals often found themselves without a reliable finisher in tight situations which reflected a season of missed opportunities and unfulfilled potential.
