The Antigua and Barbuda Falcons faced-off against the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the second match of the CPL 2024 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. It was a game full of drama as the match went down to the last ball before the Warriors snatched a win from the jaws of defeat.

The Warriors won the toss in the match and put the Falcons to bat first. Fakhar Zaman and Imad Wasim led the batting of the Falcons as they managed to post 168/6 in their 20 overs. The Warriors struggled in their chase, however, Romario Shepherd and Dwaine Pretorius delivered two fiery cameos towards the end and took the team to an unbelievable victory.

While, Shepherd and Preotius played a crucial role in the batting of the team, the game was set up by Gudakesh Motie, with his bowling. Motie's brillant spell with the ball restricted the Falcons from getting to a total that could have been out of the reach for the Warriors. Let us delve deeper into Motie's spell and try to understand the significance of it with context to the game.

Time of arrival at the bowling crease

Imran Tahir introduced Gudakesh Motie into the bowling during the 10th over of the Falcons' innings. They were going steadily at this stage at 84/1 and the Warriors desperately needed a wicket to make a comeback into the game. James and Zaman had already added 74 runs for the second wicket, and it looked like they would take the game away if they batted together for 3-4 more overs. However, Motie picked up James on the second delivery of the over and that started to tilt the momentum in favour of the Warriors.

The introduction of Motie was at a stage when the game could have either way. However, the left-arm spinner ceased the moment and delivered the goods under pressure.

Value of the wickets picked by Motie

Gudakesh Motie finished the match with figures of 3 for 25 in his four overs. The numbers itself are very impressive for a T20 game, however, the true impact of this performance is realised when we understand the value of each of the wickets picked up him.

The first wicket of Motie was Kofie James. The batter was well set at 37 off 24, when Motie got rid off him. In fact it was James's fluency that added momentum to the progress of the Falcons. If James lasted a bit more, then the game could have drifted away from the Warriors at that stage.

Sam Billings was Motie's next victim. Billings has not been in the best of batting forms lately. However, this English wicket-keeper batter is a good player of the spin and has the ability to keep the scoreboard ticking in the middle phase. His wicket at the time was necessary to keep the pressure mounting on the Falcons.

The third and final wicket for Motie was that of young Jewel Andrew. This 17-year-old played a gem of an innings at a similar stage in his previous outing. Andrew showed in the tournament opener that he can adapt himself to the match-situation and then take the attack to the opposition providing his team a strong finish. The wicket of Jewel Andrew in the 14th over, prevented the Falcons from seizing the momentum from the Warriors and changing the complexion of the game.

Conclusion

While the heroics of Shpeherd and Pretorius with the bat will be the talking point after the game, one must not forget how crucial Motie's spell was. His economical yet effective spell tilted the balance of the game in favour of the Warriors.
