Former Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel believes that Aiden Markram has the ability to win major tournaments for South Africa. Markram is currently leading the Proteas in the white-ball leg against India.

Markram's captaincy record reveals limited success, having led South Africa in six T20Is with only one victory. Similarly, in the IPL, his leadership for Sunrisers Hyderabad resulted in four wins out of 13 matches.

However, he found success while leading Sunrisers Eastern Cape, guiding the team to the SA20 title in the inaugural season of the tournament. Looking at his overall numbers and how he has done as a leader, here’s what Parthiv Patel told Cricbuzz:

“Since Aiden Markram has made his debut for South Africa, he has been looked upon as a future leader of South Africa. He is someone who has won the under 19 World Cup for South Africa, so he knows how to win big tournaments.”

Aiden Markram, who was appointed as the permanent captain of South Africa in the shortest format earlier in March, has been entrusted with leading the ODI side against India in the absence of their regular captain, Temba Bavuma.

“The sample size is very small, and it’s very early to assess Aiden Markram - the captain but when you go to South Africa and speak to anyone, they all feel that he has the capability of being the leader of the side and that is the reason every now and then he is being given the responsibility.”

Patel believes that a victory for South Africa over India in T20Is and ODIs would be a crucial confidence boost for Markram in his captaincy role.

“When you are playing against a team like India, if they win, they will get a lot of confidence, which they have been looking for. Even for Aiden Markram also, when you know you have capability, you want results in your favour, so South Africa will be able to win the series, it will give a lot of confidence to him.”

Markram, who led the South African under-19 team to clinch the 2014 Under-19 World Cup, is now in the spotlight again. With the T20 World Cup 2024 just around the corner, he is gearing up to lead the South African team in this prestigious tournament.
