Bangladesh players who could be left out [Source: @BCBtigers/x.com]
Bangladesh revealed its squad for the Asia Cup 2025, and the team boasts a plethora of talented players as the side aims to get its hands on the coveted trophy. Bangladesh have been eluded of the Asia Cup, but this time around, things could change with Pakistan, and Sri Lanka struggling, and India being the only genuine contenders.
The team has a mixture of youth and experience, and they would be eager to get through the group of death, which also comprises of Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan. The Tigers revealed a 16-member squad for the marquee event, but not all of them would manage to get a game in the competition. Here are 3 such players from the Bangladesh team who might have to sit on the bench for the entire tournament.
1) Nurul Hasan Sohan
As talented as Nurul Hasan Sohan is, the batter last played a T20I game for Bangladesh three years ago, and since then has been out of the side. However, the keeper-batter received a surprise call-up in the squad for the Asia Cup. Bangladesh already has Litton Das as the captain/wicket-keeper for the team, and that leaves no space for Nurul.
Plus, his T20I numbers are not that impressive for a place in the playing XI.
Criterion | Data |
Matches | 46 |
Runs | 445 |
Average | 16.48 |
Strike rate | 118.35 |
(Nurul Hasan T20I stats)
- An average of 16.48, with a strike rate of just 118.35 defines his T20I career. Bangladesh have set an aggressive template for its batters to follow, and Nurul doesn't fit the bill despite being picked in the side.
2) Nasum Ahmed
One of the most talented spinners of the country, Nasum Ahmed, might not get a game due to the emergence of Rishad Hossain and his spin bowling partner, Mahedi Hasan. The combination of Rishad and Mahedi did wonders against Pakistan in the recently concluded T20Is, and helped the Tigers clinched the series.
Moreover, his stats in the T20Is are not that effective, considering the fact that he has played the majority of his career on wickets which is suitable for spinners. In 36 matches, he has 36 wickets to his name, with an economy of 7.25.
His inclusion is only possible if one of Rishad, or Mahedi go for plenty of runs in a crucial game, or one of them is unfit for a clash.
3) Shoriful Islam
With Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mustafizur Rahman, and Taskin Ahmed as the three likely seamers in the playing XI, it seems Shoriful Islam might have to wait for his chances in the Asia Cup. He did well in the recently concluded T20Is vs Pakistan, but the Tigers have a liking towards Taskin Ahmed, who was outstanding in the two T20Is against Pakistan and scalped 6 wickets.
Criterion | Data |
Matches | 50 |
Dismissals | 58 |
Average | 23.13 |
Economy rate | 8.11 |
(Shoriful Islam T20I stats)
- He has an economy of 8.11 which is higher than what the other Bangladesh seamers have to offer. Plus, the other two seamers, Mustafizur, and Tanzim Hasan are wicket-takers, and unless an injury occurs, Shoriful might have to warm the bench for the entire Asia Cup.
