On Tuesday, January 14, Melbourne Renegades locked horns against Hobart Hurricanes at the Bellerive Oval. The Renegades registered a narrow defeat, but RCB's new buy, Jacob Bethell was the point of difference between the two teams.

The Renegades, batting first, were in deep trouble as they lost early wickets, but Bethell took the onus on his shoulders and scored his debut BBL fifty. Bethell, who came to bat at No.4, played a valuable knock of 87 (50), which featured eight fours and four sixes.

The knock has delighted the RCB fans, as they are happy to see Bethell return to form. Meanwhile, this article will shed light on three reasons why Bethell deserves to bat at No.4 and come above Rajat Patidar in the batting for IPL 2025.

1. Can Anchor The Innings

Bethell, who is known for his power-hitting, showed the world that he can play according to the situation. Notably, the Renegades were 23/3 when Bethell was at the crease. From there, he built his innings and played a knock of 87 at a strike-rate of 174.

Thus, despite anchoring the knock, Bethell knows how to shift gears maintain his strike rate and not hamper the runs on the board.

2. Left/Right Combination Early On

Looking at RCB's squad for IPL 2025, they have Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, Liam Livingstone, and Rajat Patidar. Thus, RCB want a left-handed batter up the order to create a left-right hand combination to disturb the opposition.

Bethell's capabilties to bat both up the order and smash big right from the word go, makes him the perfect candidate to bat above Rajat Patidar for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

3. To Better Utilise Rajat Patidar

Another reason why Bethell should be used above Patidar in the line-up is to give a free license to Patidar when he comes to bat. Ideally, the Challengers would look to use Patidar as a floater and send him to bat according to the situation of the match.

If they fixate a batting order for him, then Rajat would be under immense pressure to save the team from the collapse and would not be able to play his natural game. Thus, if Bethell come up the order, he would set up a platform for Patidar to come and launch the innings and put a big score on the board. It was because of this qualify of Rajat that RCB retained him for a whopping 11 crores.
