The Indian Premier League is often associated with entertainment, glamour and the commercial side of the sport. However, truth be said, the cash-studded league has emerged as a platform to scout young Indian talents.
In the 18 years of the league's history, several franchises have scouted talents across the country, groomed them and then they rose to become top stars in the international scenario. Similarly, this article will examine the three talents unearthed by five-time winner Mumbai Indians in IPL.
1. Jasprit Bumrah
Bumrah came to Mumbai Indians when he was 19 years old. He was scouted by the MI group in 2013, and he won his maiden IPL trophy in his debut season. Besides his unusual action, he rose to the limelight after trapping Virat Kohli in front of the wicket to get his maiden IPL wicket.
Over the years, Bumrah featured in more games and became a valuable bowling partner to Lasith Malinga. Once the SL legend departed, Bumrah took the onus on his shoulders. His rapid growth helped him earn an India call-up in 2016.
At present, Bumrah is arguably the world's best bowler, as he was the player of the tournament on India's road to the 2nd T20 World Cup title in June.
2. Tilak Varma
Varma was bought by Mumbai Indians in 2022 for a whopping 1.70 crores. The move was questioned by many as they didn't understand the logic behind spending a near 2 cr on a youngster. However, Varma was quick to make his place in the Mumbai Indians' team as he featured in the 2022 season and 397 runs in 14 matches.
What impressed the selectors was Tilak's consistency as repaid the faith shown in him by MI. In the subsequent season, he went on to score 300+ runs in each season. It led to MI retaining him ahead of IPL 2025.
Notably, MI's performance helped Tilak make his India debut in 2023 across T20Is and ODIs.
3. Yuzvendra Chahal
For the unversed, Chahal made it big with RCB, but he was scouted by Mumbai Indians. He featured for MI from 2011-13, before moving to RCB in 2014.
Chahal made it big and made his India debut in 2016. He is the highest wicket-taker in IPL history and recently became the highest-paid spinner in IPL after PBKS bought him for 18 crores.
