MS Dhoni is almost treated like a god in India. Arguably the finest captain of the Indian cricket team, MSD has created a legacy that looks unrivaled, but that legacy could be ruined for one simple reason.

There are reports circulating that MSD could play IPL 2025 as an uncapped player, a rule which the BCCI is pondering upon. Speculations have begun that BCCI will re-introduce the uncapped player rule, which states that any player who has retired from cricket five years ago, or more, is eligible to play in IPL under the uncapped category.

Smart move or a desperate move by MS Dhoni?

The introduction of this rule will also benefit CSK, since an uncapped player gets a maximum of INR 4 crore salary, and the remaining chunk could be used to strengthen the squad. But the big question arises, is there a need for MS Dhoni to play as uncapped player? Will it hinder his legacy?

The former CSK and India captain has done it all. He has won the World Cups, the Champions Trophy, IPL trophy and what not. There is nothing left for him to prove. The 2025 season should be about building a new squad, focusing on youth, instead, CSK are keeping him in the squad for their own brand value.

Also, the former skipper has an injured knee, and he got it operated after the 2023 title winning season. After winning the IPL title for the 5th time, MSD should have retired on a high. Instead, he came back this season, and looked in terrible state. So much so, that he used to come out to bat at number 8, creating an imbalance in the side.

He hardly bats, is not the captain anymore, thus keeping MSD in the side, especially under the uncapped player rule makes no sense, unless it is from the business point of view.
