In the T20 World Cup 2024 match played in New York on June 9, India defeated Pakistan with an exciting six-run triumph. The narrow win was orchestrated by skipper Rohit Sharma, who received high praise from Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting.

Despite a modest total of 119, India's bowlers rose to the occasion, limiting Pakistan to 113 for seven in 20 overs. This marked India's lowest successful T20I total defense.

In a video posted on ICC's official Instagram account, Ricky Ponting commended Rohit's leadership and strategic use of his bowlers.

Ponting highlighted Rohit's familiarity with his bowlers, many of whom he has also captained in the IPL.

He said, "Rohit Sharma is a very experienced captain, isn't he? And I just saw him then and said, mate, your captaincy today was outstanding. I don't think he could have done much more." 

Ponting specifically praised Rohit's ability to adjust strategies on the fly. Discussing the changing pitch conditions.

Ponting said, "The wicket was different in the second innings. You can see Pakistan got the ball to hold up through natural variation, and it was just a little bit tacky. But when the sun came out, the wicket dried out quite quickly and then you had to adapt and adjust on the run. I thought he did that well."

India's victory against Pakistan was their second consecutive win in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, placing them at the top of the Group A points table. The Rohit Sharma-led team will next face tournament co-host USA in New York on June 12.
