Mohammed Shami turbo-charged Indian juggernaut at the 2023 World Cup with his wicket-taking spree, despite making a late entrance into the tournament. Turning up for his country in just seven matches, the speedster bagged 24 scalps to top the wicket-taking chart.

Unfortunately for Shami, the Indian team fell short of Australia in the final, despite making an early breakthrough in the game. Regardless, his bowling masterclass at the big stage unveiled his immense potential that had often been overlooked from his previous World Cup appearances.

Much like the recently-concluded edition, the cricketer was at his impervious best at the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where he snared 17 wickets from just seven innings to emerge as one of the bowlers of the tournament.

While speaking with PUMA a couple of days after India’s demoralising World Cup 2023 defeat to Australia, the 33-year-old revealed that he was under immense pain prior to the 2015 event, and had to visit hospitals for injections after every match just to take field for his country.

Mohammed Shami recalls 2015 World Cup injury ordeal

Indian speedster Mohammed Shami revealed that he had swelling on his knee prior to the launch of the 2015 World Cup in Australia. The pace legend added that the injury forced him to make hospital visits after every match, just to take injections in a bid to prepare for the next game. While speaking with PUMA, Shami said:

“I had swelling in my knee before the 2015 WC - I had 2 options - either directly go for surgery or play the tournament & then go to surgery - while the team would return to hotel after every match - I would go to hospital to take injection, when you play for country, you forget everything.”

Through the course of his 24-wicket tournament haul in 2023, Mohammed Shami also became the fastest bowler in World Cup history to complete 50 wickets, achieving the landmark figure in just 17 matches.

Part of the initial World Cup 2023 squad, the speed demon was only drafted to the Indian playing XI after Hardik Pandya was ruled out of the side owing to his injury against Bangladesh.
