In the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup Group C match against Afghanistan on June 18, 2024, held at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia, Rashid Khan won the toss and invited West Indies to bat first.

Nicholas Pooran was the man of the hour as he played an explosive innings of 98 runs off 53 balls and played a significant role in helping Indies to make 218/5.

In a significant development, Nicholas Pooran made history by becoming the first West Indies batter in Men’s T20 Internationals (T20Is) to reach 2000 runs. Pooran joins Stafanie Taylor, Deandra Dottin, and Hayley Matthews as the third West Indies player overall to reach this landmark in T20Is.

The dynamic batter also surpassed Chris Gayle's record to smash most sixes by a West Indian batter in T20Is. Over his career, which began in 2016, he has accumulated 2012 runs in 92 matches with an average of 26.47.

After winning the player of the match, Pooran opined that it is not a good feeling to miss a century by a mere 2 runs but he feels good that he has been able to contribute to the team total. He also stated that he has assessed the conditions and taken advantage of the powerplay.

"First of all, thanks to the almighty. You don't want to be at 97 and then get run-out. But at the end of it all, you need to take your team to a good total. Obviously, to assess the conditions and take advantage of the powerplay. I had to see the conditions early and take responsibility. I felt like it was my day. When it is your day, you need to make it big. I just felt that it was my night, and I could get on with it. It’s difficult to strike the ball when it’s a little slow and spinning, but I’m happy to get a good wicket; got to appreciate the conditions.

His innings helped West Indies post a substantial total of 218 for 5. Unfortunately, the West Indian batter was run out in the final over while he attempted to retain the strike.
