After 29 long years, Pakistani fans are enjoying some unmissable thrills of an ICC event as the Champions Trophy returns to Pakistani soil. However, while the nation celebrates hosting this mega tournament, their squad selection has sparked debate. With just one specialist spinner in the lineup, questions arise about their strategy.
As the hosting side is stepping into the marquee event, fans to experts are raising concerns over their spin strategy. Ace pacer Mohammad Amir is also one of them as he also questioned Pakistan’s spin strategy on Dubai soil.
Mohammad Aamir On Pakistan's Spin Miss
As the ‘Men In Green’ have already started their campaign, their squad selection is still the talk of the town as they decided to step into the big stage with a lone spinner. With their second match against archrivals India in Dubai fast approaching, concerns are growing over how they’ll fare on the spin-friendly surface with such limited spin options. In the show, ‘Haarna Mana Hai’ Mohammad Amir questioned Pakistan’s spin strategy.
“Some players could have been included—for example, the missing part I see is the spinners. Everyone, even the public, is talking about it. If you look at the tri-nation series, New Zealand won matches because of their spinners.” Amir said.
“So, there could be a need for them, especially in Dubai, because the wickets will be used ones. The ILT20 was played entirely on those wickets, so you never know,” he said.
Highlighting The Absence Of Key Players
While naming the squad, the team management named Abrar Ahmed as their only spin option. Interestingly, they included Khushdil Shah instead by overlooking Usama Mir and even Shadab Khan. When comparing all-round capabilities, Shadab holds the edge with his superior batting skills. Even Mohammad Amir has weighed in on the decision, questioning the choice.
“Considering the dry conditions there, spinners might be needed. I feel Usama Mir could have been an option. And if you were bringing in Khushdil Shah, then I think if Usama wasn't in your plan, you could have kept Shadab Khan instead. He could have provided batting depth as well.” Amir said.
“When the ball is turning, and you have a full-fledged fielder, then if this was the plan, you could have gone with Shadab. Otherwise, a genuine spinner like Usama could have been a better choice.” Amir concluded.
Pakistan is gearing up for the marquee tournament on their home turf, but not without facing a few hurdles. After wrapping up their match against the Kiwis, the real test awaits in Dubai, where they’ll clash with India. Fans are waiting for another thrilling chapter of the India-Pakistan rivalry.
