Rift between Gambhir and Pant? [Source: @StarcKKR/x.com]
India lost the Headingley Test match against England but despite the setback, the visitors had something to cheer about as Rishabh Pant came back in form with back-to-back centuries in the Test match. The keeper-batter broke several records as the England bowlers had no answer to his onslaught.
What fuelled the rift rumours between Pant and Gambhir?
After the Test match ended, head coach Gautam Gambhir attended the post-match press conference and one of the journalists asked him about Pant's twin centuries in the game. However, Gambhir interrupted the journalist mid-way and instead of answering specifically about Pant, the head coach also applauded the knocks of other centurions in the match.
Reporter asked: Positive by Rishabh Pant 2 centuries, How was it to witness the vice-captain scoring two centuries ?
Gautam Gambhir replied: Jaiswal, Gill, and Rahul have also scored centuries.
Jadeja's story reveals dark past between Gambhir-Pant
Many fans are now speculating that there is something brewing between the India keeper and the coach and the two don't see eye to eye with each other. After the match, former India player and Delhi coach, Ajay Jadeja revealed an old story wherein he talked about how Gambhir never wanted to select Pant in the Delhi squad.
“I will never forget our first meeting," Jadeja said on Sony Sports. “I was the coach of Delhi for a few days before quitting (in 2015). The selectors and captain kept arguing over the players they wanted to have in the team. Pant wasn’t picked."
"I still told him (Pant) to attend the practice session for the Ranji Trophy, telling him that it doesn’t matter that you’ve not been selected, there will be a chance in future." said Ajay Jadeja in his statement to Sony Sports.
Pant's reply shocked Jadeja as it showed the self-confidence the 18-year-old Pant had on himself.
"Bhaiya rehne do na, jab zaroorat padegi, ghar se bulayenge," Pant said to Jadeja.
Gambhir left the Delhi captaincy in 2018 and Pant went on to become one of the best Test keepers as he made a name for himself with his maverick batting style. The duo of Gambhir and Pant were also a part of the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
(Note: The rift rumours are all speculation by fans, given the fact that Gambhir led the Delhi team from 2014-17, and Pant also emerged at the same time).
