'They're Going To Regret Leaving Harry Brook', Ex-Coach Warns SRH Before IPL 2024

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Tom Moody believes the ouster of England's rising young middle-order batter Harry Brook could be a cause of great "regret" for the 2016 champions at the upcoming auction for IPL 2024

Moody reckons the current team management and ownership group might have based their judgement and decision on Brook for potentially marginalising his prize before restoring his services. However, other franchises will not make it such a straightforward matter with the attacking right-hander capable of destroying attacks on his day.

Sunrisers were expected to give the young Englishman more time in their set-up before he could flourish with more experience. Clearly not tuned yet with Indian conditions, Brook found it hard to adjust to spin-friendly realms and managed just 190 runs in his 11 innings of IPL 2023.

Acquired at the mini-auction for a whopping sum of INR 13.25 crores, the 24-year-old mustered a pedestrian average of just nine outside his solitary great outing when he smashed a century against an in-transition Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) side.

Moody Speaks On Sunrisers' Decision To Oust Brook

Speaking to Star Sports in a retention/release special show ahead of the much-anticipated IPL 2024 auctions, Moody assessed the thinking behind Sunrisers' call on Brook and said the idea could be that the franchise wants to retain the services of the player but without paying him the existing sum.

Recognising they overpriced him for IPL 2023 and gave him an ill-suited spot, Moody believes the 2016 champions could bid for Brook at a lesser prize in the looming auction, a scenario which, however, could end up in regret for the team struggling over the past few editions.

"Maybe their strategy is to get him back for half the price. But I think SRH are potentially going to regret the fact that Harry Brook is back in the auction because he is an unbelievable talent," said the former Australia allrounder.

"The other thing we need to consider is that in his first season of the IPL, he batted out of position in 80 percent of the games. He was bought as a middle-order No. 4 player, and they forced him up to the top of the order, which he has never opened in T20 cricket before."

"In a way, it is the franchise to blame as much as the player to blame with regards to how they used him. It is like picking a striker in a football match and getting him to play in the back the whole season and wondering why he is not doing well," he added.
