'Wouldn't Discount Pat Cummins Rotating Himself During Second Half of Ashes': Jason Gillespie

Australian skipper Pat Cummins can do no wrong lately, from leading his side to their maiden ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023 win, to helping the Baggy Greens beat arch-rivals England at Edgbaston Test and take a 1-0 lead in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series.

Cummins will be in action when Australia meets Ben Stokes-led England in the second Ashes Test at Lord's, attempting to gain a 2-0 lead. The track is expected to be bowler-friendly, and Australia might field an all-out pace attack.

No stranger to Ashes encounters, former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie has stated that Cummins could rest from the upcoming third and fourth Test, which begin on July 6 and July 19, respectively, providing less time for bowlers to rest.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Gillespie, who coaches South Australia and Adelaide Strikers, said that Australia have Steven Smith in the ranks, who could easily don the captain's hat.

Wouldn't discount Cummins rotating himself: Gillespie

"I wouldn't discount Cummins rotating himself, particularly at the backend of the series where there are back-to-back Tests. They know they've got Steve Smith who is more than capable of leading, or Alex Carey. They have got enough depth in the bowling."

"The number of overs Cameron Green bowls is going to have a big impact. Because, if he bowls as few overs as he did in the first Test (eight), then it will put a bigger workload on Cummins and the other bowlers."

Interestingly, Cummins has openly admitted to wanting to feature in all five Tests. The 48-year-old backed Australia to win the Ashes 2023 with a margin of 3-1 and retain the coveted urn.
