Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has backed his national teammates Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav amidst their recent struggles in T20I cricket. Both Shubman and Suryakumar are yet to notch up a single T20I half-century between them this year, which included the entirety of the 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup in the UAE, an away series against Australia and the ongoing home series against South Africa.

Abhishek Sharma believes that the two out-of-form Indian batters will come up clutch in the upcoming 2025 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Abhishek Sharma has a “lot of faith” in Shubman Gill

Soon after Team India walloped South Africa by seven wickets in Dharamsala to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match T20I series, explosive Indian opener Abhishek Sharma backed his opening partner Shubman Gill and captain Suryakumar Yadav.

While speaking with the reporters, he said:

“I tell you one thing straight away that trust me, these two guys are going to win matches at the World Cup and before in other series as well. I have been playing with them for so long, especially with Shubman, so I know where he can win the match, what are the conditions, irrespective of the team. I have a lot of faith in him from the beginning and I hope everyone will see it very soon and everyone will have faith.”

Chasing just 118 for a win in Dharamsala, Shubman Gill managed to get just 28 at run-a-ball before Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for only 12 from 11 balls. While Shubman has aggregated 32 runs in three innings of this series at an abysmal average of 10.67, the Indian skipper has been averaging 9.67 for his 29 runs in as many innings.

Overall, in the year 2025, the Indian opener has been averaging just 24.25, and his skipper has been averaging 14.20 as both cricketers continue to endure a lean patch in T20I cricket.

Team India will now face South Africa in the fourth T20I on December 17 in Lucknow.
