Matheesha Pathirana for CSK - (Source: AFP)
Chennai Super Kings have had a busy couple of weeks as the Men in Yellow traded in Sanju Samson by giving away Ravindra Jadeja. Further, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side came under the scanner after CSK released their premium bowler Matheesha Pathirana ahead of the auction.
Pathirana was struggling for form in the past year, and his exit has freed up 13 crores. Now, CSK will enter the auction with a purse value of 43 crores, which is the second-highest purse value for the upcoming mini-auction on December 16.
Suddenly, a lot of interest has been garnered towards Pathirana, who continues to be in hot demand as several teams eye a solid wicket-taking bowler. However, in the latest events, Chennai Super Kings have confirmed their belief in the Sri Lankan seamer and stated that they will go after the right-arm seamer in the mini-auction.
CSK to go after Pathirana in IPL 2026 mini-auction
Speaking to Revsportz, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has recently provided an explanation and stated that they want to bring back Pathirana at a lower price point.
“We wanted to enter the auction with a substantial purse. We had already made tough calls by trading out Jadeja and Curran. Sanju Samson came at ₹18 crore. Given the kind of combination we are trying to build, the management collectively felt that a bigger purse would give us a better chance to construct a stronger squad," Kasi told RevSportz.
“Whatever we do will always be in the best interests of the team. We will try to get him back, but it will depend on how the auction pans out,” Kasi added.
Since Chennai Super Kings are entering the auction with a purse value of 43 crores, their only tough competition is KKR, who have the highest purse with 64 crores.
