A cricketer's true worth shines in tough situations, and Sanju Samson shone for India in a crunch match against South Africa on Thursday with a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series on the line.

With the series locked 1-1, Samson produced a masterful knock at Paarl in the third and final ODI, where India prevailed over South Africa by 78 runs.

Batting first, Samson displayed composure and control on a two-paced wicket and converted his start into a stunning maiden ODI ton, which came eight years after the wicketkeeper-batter's debut for India in international cricket.

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar upon Samson's maiden century lauded the 29-year-old for his shot selection and flawless cricket. Speaking on Star Sports, the former Indian opener stressed upon how this century will give confidence to Samson and change the Rajasthan Royal captain's career from hereon.

Gavaskar On Sanju Samson's 108 vs SA

"The standout for me from this innings was his (Sanju Samson's) shot selection. In the past, he has gotten out despite getting starts. Today, you couldn't fault him at all, he was biding his time, waiting for the bad ball, and then getting a hundred. I think this hundred is going to change his career. One, he will get more opportunities because of this hundred. Secondly, I think he will also start to believe in himself more that he belongs to this level."

He has always belonged here, mind you. We all know the talent he has. But somehow he had not delivered, but today he delivered not just for everybody but for himself as well."

Samson's 114-ball 108 was laced with six fours and three sixes, which ensured the pressure of the scoreboard never got to India. In 16 ODIs, the Trivandrum-born has slammed 510 runs at an average of 56.67, despite being given limited chances.
