Sam Curran is the third-most priced player in IPL history [X.com]
One of England's leading all-rounders Sam Curran has since the highs of ICC T20 World Cup 2022 been on a decline and has failed to live up to his own set standards across international and domestic cricket.
Post winning the T20 World Cup Down Under, Curran bagged the then-highest-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) contract with Punjab Kings for INR 18.50 crore but could not perform up to expectations in the 2023 edition.
Former South Africa great and an IPL legend AB de Villiers has stated that Curran has been overpaid having spent time with Kings and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), respectively in the past three years.
In a Q&A session on his YouTube, de Villiers pointed out Curran's poor form of late which led to such a statement.
"I don’t like to be controversial. But, in my opinion, he’s been overpaid for quite a few years now. He’s not a bad player; I like him. He’s had a fantastic World Cup, but that’s quite a few years back. I don’t think he’s had a very good IPL recently. Also, for England, he hasn’t played exceptionally well."
In 2023 edition, Curran scored 276 runs and picked up 10 wickets, while overall in 46 IPL matches, the T20 WC 2022 Final 'Player Of The Match' awardee has slammed 613 runs, and snatched 42 wickets.
