'Why Is He Not Part Of Team?': Ex-IND Star 'Lashes' Out At Selectors For Ignoring Samson

Sanju Samson's exclusion from India's ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka has sparked considerable debate.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra shared his thoughts on this decision in a video posted on his YouTube channel, attributing Samson’s omission to the return of senior players and ongoing transitions within Team India.

Seems to be a lack of clear communication: Chopra

Chopra explained, “"The problem is that you see quite often that the main team players don't play between two World Cups. Then some youngster plays and when he does well, you feel he is very good and should be given opportunities but as soon as the senior player becomes available, the senior plays and the youngster is left out. If you see logically, it's right because he was keeping the bench warm, but is it right?"

Samson’s recent performance in ODIs adds weight to the controversy. He scored an impressive century (108) against South Africa in Paarl on December 21, 2023.

His exclusion surprised many, including Chopra, who questioned the clarity of the selection process.

“When the transition happens, a new coach, a new captain or a new selection committee, bridges are not built at times and there are gaps left in the middle. It's that gap in Sanju Samson's case because clarity of thought is not there as he had scored a century the last time he was played, so why he is not a part of the team now?" the former India opener added. Chopra pondered.

Since his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in July 2021, Samson has accumulated 510 runs in 16 matches, boasting a strike rate of 99.6. His contributions include one century and three fifties. His stellar form continued in the IPL 2024 season, where he amassed 531 runs for the Rajasthan Royals.

The Sri Lanka white-ball tour begins on July 27, with the ODI series commencing on August 2.
