Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have become two of the most iconic cricketers in modern-day cricket. Their contributions to Indian cricket are monumental, and replacing them in the coming years seems like a daunting task. Their leadership, consistency, and ability to perform under pressure have set them apart, making it difficult for any emerging player to step into their shoes.

Piyush Chawla On The Future Of Indian Cricket

In a recent podcast, veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla discussed the possible successors of Kohli and Sharma, naming Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad as the future stars of Indian cricket.

Speaking with Shubhanker Mishra, Chawla highlighted Gill’s technique and temperament, describing him as the perfect candidate to carry forward the legacy. Chawla noted that Gill’s sound technique makes him a reliable batter, even during rough patches, ensuring his place in the long-term plans for Indian cricket.

"Shubman Gill is at the top of my list," Chawla asserted. "His technique is impeccable. When a batter experiences a rough patch, it's their technique that often helps them get back on track. Gill’s technique is robust and reliable, making him an ideal successor," he said.

Similarly, Chawla praised Ruturaj Gaikwad, acknowledging his consistent performances in the limited opportunities he has had. Despite challenges like injuries and being in and out of the team, Gaikwad has shown tremendous potential, especially in T20 cricket, making him another solid option for the future.

“Ruturaj Gaikwad is another special player,” Chawla stated. “He may have faced some setbacks, like being dropped or injured, but whenever given a chance, he has shown a distinct flair. His performances, especially in T20Is where he has scored 633 runs, have been commendable,” he said.

Chawla's Thoughts On Retirement

During the same podcast, Chawla also addressed the topic of his own retirement. He confirmed that he plans to retire only after MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain and Chennai Super Kings legend.

While MS Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, he continues to play in the IPL, and Chawla indicated that he would follow suit after Dhoni decides to step away from the game.
