Ravichandran Ashwin hailed Senuran Muthusamy for his century against India in the second Test held at Guwahati, but with a twist. He revisited an old tweet where he praised the all-rounder for his brilliant knock against Pakistan.

Muthusamy, playing in just his eighth Test, displayed patience and composure, combining solid defence with calculated aggression.

After his partner Kyle Verreynne fell for 45, Senuran Muthusamy joined Marco Jansen to take South Africa’s score past 400, leaving India on the back foot.

Muthusamy scored his maiden Test hundred in 192 balls, thus frustrating the Indian bowlers on day two of the Test match. He was dismissed on 109 in the third session but the damage was already done.

Meanwhile, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin praised Senuran Muthusamy on social media with an interesting message. Perhaps he already knew the all-rounder was bound to do wonders in India.

Ashwin used an old tweet to highlight how good the all-rounder has been this year in the Tests. In October, South Africa toured Pakistan, and Senuran Muthusamy emerged as the underrated hero.

He scored 89* in the second Test and picked up 11 wickets across two innings in the first Test to become South Africa’s most impactful player.

Now, against India, Muthusamy has extended his dream form. Before this Test, he had 22 wickets to his name in seven games with two five-wicket-hauls.

Senuran Muthusamy has risen through the ranks quickly

Born in 1994 in Durban to Indian-origin parents, Senuran Muthusamy maintains strong ties with his Tamil heritage.

He began his cricket journey in Durban, representing KwaZulu-Natal from U11 to U19 levels before joining the Dolphins. He started off purely as a top-order batsman but became a genuine all-rounder when his bowling really took off.

He made his Test debut in 2019 against India in Visakhapatnam, claiming the wicket of Indian captain Virat Kohli.

Despite stiff competition in South Africa’s spin department, Senuran Muthusamy has remained a reliable and quietly influential figure in the team. His maiden century in Guwahati is just the start of a promising career.
