On Sunday, November 23, Bangladesh registered a comfortable 217-run win over Ireland in the 2nd Test at Mirpur, Dhaka, to seal the series 2-0. It was a one-sided affair as the Najmul Shanto-led side thumped the visitors courtesy of Mushfiqur Rahim, who slammed a century in the first innings and a fifty in the next.

However, despite a 2-0 Test win at home, the recent results won't be added to Bangladesh's WTC standings and this article will decode the reason behind this move.

Why Is the Bangladesh vs Ireland Test Series Not Part of the 2025-27 WTC Cycle?

According to the rules set by the ICC, only the top nine-ranked teams in the ICC Test rankings are eligible to play in the World Test Championship. Since 2019, which was the inaugural year of the elite Test tournament, this format has been in place.

Bangladesh are part of the WTC cycle, but Ireland is currently ranked 10th which makes them ineligible for the World Test Championship . As a result, the Bangladesh vs Ireland series will be considered an official Test match, but it will not be part of the WTC cycle.

Bangladesh struggling WTC

Notably, in the ongoing WTC 2025-27 cycle, Bangladesh have played just two Tests and are yet to win a solitary game. In the two matches, The Tigers have lost one and drawn one. It has eventually led Bangladesh to be placed seventh on the table.

For the unversed, Bangladesh's next Test assignment will be against Pakistan in March 2026. The last time Bangladesh played against Pakistan, they stunned the Shan Masood-led side and registered a historic series win.

However, the Tigers are yet to qualify for the WTC finals once and have always performed underwhelming in the prestige red-ball event.
