West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite expressed his disappointment with his team's batting performance in the first Test against India in Dominica.

Team India secured a resounding victory, defeating West Indies by an innings and 141 runs. India resumed their first innings at 312/2 and eventually declared at 421/5. Ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin once again troubled the West Indies batters, claiming impressive figures of 7/71 in 21.3 overs, leading to the visitors being dismissed for a mere 130 runs in 50.3 overs.

Unfortunately, the West Indies batters failed to perform up to expectations, scoring 150 and 130 in their first and second innings, respectively.

The 30-year-old Barbados-born cricketer acknowledged that his team's inability to execute their intended shots was a significant factor in their disappointing performance. He also expressed personal disappointment for not leading from the front and failing to score runs himself, managing only 20 and 7 in his two innings in Dominica.

"We let ourselves down with the bat. Our first-innings total was simply inadequate. I'm disappointed that I didn't contribute with runs. As a leader, I need to set the example and score runs,”  Kraigg Brathwaite said after the defeat.

Brathwaite highlighted that the team faced a few dismissals that negatively impacted their performance, losing a wicket before lunch and failing to seize crucial opportunities. He emphasized the need for senior players to step up and take charge. Brathwaite also recognized that the team's shot execution fell short and attributed some dismissals to defensive play.

"In the first innings, a few dismissals were not good for us. We lost a wicket before lunch. We lost certain situations. Senior guys have to lead the way. I think we didn't execute the shots we were trying. We had some defensive dismissals,”  added Brathwaite.

After a disappointing first Test match, West Indies will be eager to bounce back, when the two sides meet for the second Test in Trinidad on July 20.
