In a major boost, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has experienced a remarkable 72% increase in its revenue share from the ICC. This news was shared via an email from BCCI secretary Jay Shah to the state associations after the ICC's approval of revenue distribution during their Annual conference in Durban.
According to the latest Cricbuzz report, the BCCI's share now amounts to around $231 million or approximately Rs 2,000 crore annually. This remarkable surge is attributed to the lucrative media rights agreement between the ICC and Indian broadcaster, Disney Star.
"The BCCI has been allocated a share of 38.5% in the new revenue distribution model approved by the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board in its recent meeting held in Durban, South Africa. As you are aware, India's share was 22.4% in the previous cycle, which is now at 38.5%, a jump of approximately 72%.
This is a significant increase in BCCI's share. This achievement is testament to the collective efforts and support of all our state associations and my colleagues at the BCCI," Jay Shah said in the mail, in possession of Cricbuzz.
In a groundbreaking agreement, Disney Star has secured the broadcasting rights for the next four years with a staggering offer of $3.1 billion. This new deal far surpasses the previous eight-year agreement, valued at only $1.9 billion. The significant increase in the media rights deal has led to a remarkable boost in the BCCI's financial outlook.
"This allocation reflects the tremendous efforts and contributions made by each one of you and the faith you have shown in the leadership at the BCCI. Our strong diplomatic and strategic ties with fellow ICC members have played a vital role in securing this substantial share for India. This is a recognition of the significance of India as a nation in world cricket and underlines the fact that the heart of cricket well and truly beats in India," he further said.
The increased revenue share for the BCCI will have a profound impact on various aspects of Indian cricket. It will provide the BCCI with more financial resources to invest in the development of the sport, infrastructure, and grassroots programs.
The uplift in revenue share signifies the BCCI's strong position and influence in international cricket.
