Indian captain Rohit Sharma has backed leading spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to come up trumps against England in their forthcoming five-match Test series. During a recent pre-match press conference, Sharma emphasised the importance of having Ashwin in the squad and claimed that the latter always prioritises the interests of the team.

Rohit Sharma praises Ashwin ahead of ENG Tests

A day prior to India’s five-match Test series against England at Hyderabad, Rohit Sharma praised Ravichandran Ashwin and backed the senior spinner to replicate his past success for the Indian team.

While speaking with the reporters, Sharma said:

“We all know his quality and class. We know how important he is for us. He always puts the team ahead. I hope this series is no different for him and he can do the job for us as he has done in the past.”

Remarkably, Ravichandran Ashwin will start the series just 10 strikes away from completing 500 wickets in Tests. The 37-year-old is currently sitting on a pile of 490 wickets from just 95 matches at an astonishing average of 23.69. If Ashwin manages to breach the milestone, he will become the ninth cricketer in history and the second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to tally 500 scalps in the format.

Ashwin can also achieve a major landmark against England, considering the off-spinner has snapped 88 English victims so far from just 19 matches at an average of 28.59 and is only 12 wickets away from reaching 100 wickets.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma and star all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin will both begin their quest against England from January 25 onwards. The much-awaited series opener will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
