New Zealand cricketer Rachin Ravindra bagged the ICC Emerging Player of the Year honor at the ICC Awards on January 24. The cricketer was favored over South African paceman Gerald Coetzee, Sri Lanka’s new-ball speedster Dilshan Madushanka and Indian batting prodigy Yashasvi Jaiswal by the ICC voting academy.

Ravindra was also one of the highest run-scorers at the 2023 World Cup in India, even though he entered the tournament off the back of just a handful of ODI caps to his name.

Rachin Ravindra wins ICC Emerging Player award

New Zealand batting all-rounder Rachin Ravindra won the ICC Emerging Player of the Year award for his performance throughout 2023.

The dazzling left-handed batsman, who made his ODI debut for New Zealand in March 2023 itself, went on to tally 820 runs across 21 innings until late-December. The 24-year-old plundered three centuries and three half-centuries in his maiden year at the ODI arena.

Remarkably, Ravindra scored 578 of those runs at the 2023 World Cup alone, all while maintaining a staggering average of over 64, with three tons and two additional scores of fifty or more to his name.

He eventually finished the competition as the fourth highest run-scorer behind Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock; and the highest from his country as he led teammate Daryl Mitchell by 26 runs.

Emerging speedsters Gerald Coetzee (South Africa) and Dilshan Madushanka (Sri Lanka) lost out on the opportunity, even though the two cricketers finished the year among the highest wicket-takers list of 2023.

Young Indian opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal was also discarded for the honors, despite starring in India’s Test series win in West Indies.
