Rajasthan Royals ravaged RCB by four wickets at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on May 22 to book a place in the second qualifier of the IPL 2024 season. Winning skipper Sanju Samson hailed his team’s young batting unit for its comprehensive performance, and also highlighted the significance of Kumar Sangakkara and Shane Bond in the support staff.

Sanju Samson hails youngsters, senses ‘bug’ in the team

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson acknowledged his team’s welcome win in the Eliminator after losing four successive games towards the end of the league stage.

He said:

“Yeah, as I said at the toss, what cricket and life has taught us is that we will have great phase and lean phase. But what's important is to bounce back. Coming to the knockouts, we had lost many games. We were questioning ourselves but happy to see everyone perform today.”

Sanju Samson also credited head coach Kumar Sangakkara and bowling coach Shane Bond for coming up with a range of plans for tackling opposition’s batters. The dashing wicketkeeper-batter further praised the collective brilliance of his young batting unit, featuring the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel. Samson added:

“All the credit goes to the players. We have spend plenty of time watching the opposition's batters and what to bowl and set the field. Credit to Sanga and Shane Bond as well. They have spend plenty of time sitting in the hotel rooms and discussing the plans. If you look at our batting unit, it's a mixture of a lot of youngsters and some experienced batters. Yashasvi is 22, Riyan is 22, Dhruv is 22. They don't have much experience but to see them perform this way is amazing.”

Sanju Samson also reckons there is a “bug” in his team, considering several of his teammates have been coughing a lot off late.

“I'm not 100% actually. I guess we have a bug in our team. Lots of coughs and many are unwell.”

With a place in the second qualifier, the Rajasthan Royals franchise will now face the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 24 at Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. The winner of the match will go up against the KKR at the same venue in the final.
