The T20 season on Indian soil has begun as the third edition of the Women's Premier League is set to commence on February 14. The defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru are set to take on Gujarat Giants in the inaugural clash.
In the cricket world, Royal Challengers Bengaluru are known for their passionate fanbase, and that is no different even in the Women's Premier League. Before stepping into the inaugural match, RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana reflected on the electrifying fanbase.
Smriti Mandhana On RCB’s Fanbase
Smriti Mandhana and Co. proudly shifted the chant from 'Ee Sala Cup Namde' to 'Ee Sala Cup Namdu' after Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Delhi Capitals in the final last year and lifted their maiden WPL trophy. After that, fans celebrated the win with all hearts.
As the team is all set to step into the WPL 2025, Smriti Mandhana highlighted how RCB's huge fanbase motivates the team to perform at their best while also acknowledging the pressures that come with such high expectations.
“I think for us, we don't think much about what's happening around. It is really important to focus on playing good cricket as a team, that's a culture we are trying to set as a team because the fanbase of RCB is such that appreciation and criticism will be a little more as compared to other teams.” Mandhana said.
“It is important for us to stick together as a group. Who will not want people chanting RCB everywhere you travel, so that's a big positive,” she added.
RCB’s Inaugural Mission Against Gujarat Giants
As the third edition of the WPL is set to go live on February 14, Royal Challengers Bengaluru are set to face Gujarat Giants at the Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara. However, before they step onto the field, Smriti Mandhana and her squad have been hit by a series of injury setbacks, with star spinner Asha Sobhana ruled out due to a knee injury.
The list is pretty long, as Kate Cross and Sophie Devine have withdrawn their names from this edition of the tournament. Sophie Molineux is also missing the season due to an unfortunate injury. Despite these setbacks, the franchise remains focused on making a strong start to the campaign, determined to chase the title once again.
