CSK have been dismal in IPL 2025 [Source: @iplt20.com]
It is not often you see Chennai Super Kings (CSK) staring at the wrong end of the IPL points table in May. By now, they are usually fine-tuning their playoff plans but IPL 2025 has thrown a curveball as CSK, one of the league’s most consistent sides, is stuck at the bottom and out of the tournament.
Michael Hussey Opens Up On CSK’s Struggles And Road Ahead
Losses have piled up, especially at Chepauk and even the fans are wondering where the spark has gone. But CSK’s batting coach Michael Hussey isn’t ready to hit the panic button just yet.
Ahead of the big RCB vs CSK IPL 2025 match, the Aussie legend opened up about what has gone wrong this year, what needs fixing and why the team still believes in its DNA.
Despite a string of disappointing results, Hussey made it clear that CSK won’t throw their playbook out the window.
“We’re certainly not going to panic and throw everything out just because it hasn’t gone well this year. But we definitely need to tidy up on a few areas. There’s been lots of conversations... it’s given us a really clear view on what we need to look at for next season," Hussey said on Friday
While he didn’t give away what exactly is on the chopping block, he did mention “very specific” planning already underway for IPL 2026.
Home Form Has Been A Nightmare
One of the biggest letdowns this season has been CSK’s form at Chepauk. The fortress has turned leaky. In past full-home seasons, 2015, 2019, 2023, 2024. they lost just seven games combined. This year alone, they have already lost five.
“It’s surprising, isn’t it, to lose so many games at home,” Hussey admitted. “Other teams are getting better at playing at Chepauk as well... the dew’s played a bit of a factor too, making it easier to bat second. But I think it comes down to the way we’ve played in general, too many mistakes with bat, ball, and in the field.”
He didn’t blame the toss either, despite CSK having won just two all season. Hussey put it down to basic execution and discipline, not rising to the moment when it mattered most.
Margins Matter In This League
For fans wondering if this is a full-on collapse, Michael Hussey offered a more balanced view. He believes the margins in this year’s IPL are razor-thin and CSK just happened to fall on the wrong side of them.
“Some might be injuries, some might be a bit of bad luck here or there, some might be some mistakes made along the way as well. We haven’t won many games but I actually don’t think we’re too far away. We have got some match-winning players in that line-up for a number of reasons. It hasn’t quite gone the way we would have liked it but I still think we’re close and we can definitely compete with any team in the competition.”
Still Plenty To Play For
Hussey also addressed motivation within the squad now that playoffs look unlikely. The Aussie legend said the group’s pride, legacy and fanbase are reason enough to keep pushing hard till the very end.
“There’s a lot of motivation in the squad. Plus they’re a very proud group. We’re very proud to play for CSK. Massive fan base and so you want to put in good performances to please the fans as well,” he said.
And for some fringe players, the final few games are auditions for next season.
“It’s a great opportunity for some guys to get a chance to play in the IPL. Hopefully they can grab their chances and shore up their spot in the squad for the next few years.”
It’s been a humbling season for CSK but they aren’t sulking. Hussey’s words show the franchise isn’t about knee-jerk changes. They are bruised, not broken. And with experienced heads like him steering the rebuild, it won’t be a surprise if CSK rise from the ashes in 2026.
