After India’s heartbreaking 22-run defeat vs England at Lord’s, captain Shubman Gill stated that Rishabh Pant’s run-out in the first inning was a turning point as India lost an opportunity to build up a lead. However, he praised Ravindra Jadeja for his fighting spirit on Day 5.
India are 1-2 down in a 5-game series against England after they lost the Lord’s Test by just 22 runs. In the 193-run chase, the visitors had a collapse on Day 5’s first session, but Jadeja kept on fighting with tailenders to bring the margin down by 22 runs before Bashir picked the final wicket of Siraj.
Shubman Gill Says Rishabh Pant’s Run-Out Changed The Game
Losing captain Shubman Gill reviewed India’s loss in the post-game press conference. As per TOI’s Sahil Malhotra, Gill deemed Rishabh Pant’s run-out in India's first innings as a major turning point as his team collapsed to 387 to level the scores and lost an opportunity to pile up some lead.
However, despite the narrative that KL Rahul forced Pant into that suicidal run for his century, Gill defended his batters, saying the call came from Rishabh and it was a mere case of error in judgment.
"Rishabh Pant’s run out was the biggest moment in the game. We knew batting on Day 5 wouldn’t be easy. It wasn’t about personal milestone but error of judgement. it was Pant’s call and KL was at danger end," Gill said.
Pant, batting with a broken finger, got run out by Ben Stokes on 74 off 112 in the first inning. That wicket ended a strong 141-run partnership for the 4th wicket.
Gill Heaps Praise On Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja unleashed every ounce of his class, experience, and resilience to keep India in the fight at Lord's on Day 5. Batting with the tail, he piled up 61* runs off 181 balls to frustrate England.
Praising Jadeja’s knock, captain Shubman Gill said the veteran all-rounder is a valuable player and showed tremendous character under pressure.
"Ravindra Jadeja is India’s Most Valuable Player. Very hard to find. Batting with tail was something we spoke about. Character which showed was tremendous," he added.
However, Jadeja’s fightback ended in heartbreak as Siraj got bowled on the other end, and India lost the high-voltage Lord’s Test by 22 runs.
