After India reduced Australia to 474 at MCG on the second day of the 4th Test, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul fell early on Day 2, leaving the team in a tough spot. However, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal responded with a 100-run partnership, putting India in control. Disaster struck when Jaiswal was run out for 82 after a miscommunication with Kohli.
Now, fans of the cricketing community and the cricket gurus are split on who should take the blame. The nation already saw a stupendous on-air fight between Irfan Pathan and Sanjay Manjrekar and with various experts weighing in, Sunil Gavaskar has also shared his take on the Kohli-Jaiswal mix-up.
Gavaskar Analyzes Kohli-Jaiswal Miscommunication
After Jaiswal's unfortunate dismissal who was standing at a brilliant 82, Virat Kohli was also dismissed for 36 while he chased his nemesis-an off-stump delivery- from Scott Boland.
Gavaskar apparently seemed to take Jaiswal's side in the dismissal as he stated that Virat Kohli could have made it to the other end of the crease if he reacted promptly to Jaiswal's call.
“It could have been a quick single, and someone like Virat Kohli would likely have made it. However, the issue was that he glanced at the fielder. When you do that, you lose that crucial second, and naturally, you hesitate, thinking, ‘I need to make it.’ As a result, your balance is off, and it becomes a tight call,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
However, Gavaskar did not completely side with Jaiswal as he pointed out that the call for the run was unnecessary and 'risky' from the very beginning.
“I believe at that point, there was no need to take a risky run. You’re batting well, and the runs are coming. The risk wasn’t essential at that moment. However, it could have been made because Kohli is such an excellent runner between the wickets,” Gavaskar added.
Overall, Gavaskar was disappointed with Kohli, mentioning his ability as a runner. While he recognized the risk of the run, Gavaskar opined that a quicker decision could have secured the single.
India Fights Back On Day 3 As Nitish, Sundar Takes Control
Meanwhile, India has taken the control somewhat back from the Aussies on Day 3 with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar cruising India's ship. What looked like a desperate attempt to avoid a follow-on from Australia at the beginning of Day 3, now inches towards minimizing the trail, all thanks to the brilliant 100-plus-run stand between Reddy and Sundar.
While Pant's careless dismissal off of an audacious shot and Jadeja's struggle in front of Nathan Lyon got India off the hook earlier in the day, the tail-enders reversed the tides for the Men in Blue as they look confident to march past the trail set by Australia.
