Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar couldn’t hold back his frustration after Rishabh Pant's careless dismissal in the ongoing fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Pant's unusual shot selection left fans and experts stunned, and Gavaskar had some harsh words for the young wicketkeeper-batter.
Pant, who was batting at number six, had scored 28 runs off 37 balls when he was dismissed in a bizarre fashion. Attempting an audacious scoop shot, Pant sent the ball straight into the hands of Nathan Lyon, who was stationed at short fine leg. This unexpected dismissal came at a crucial moment in the game, leaving India in a tough spot.
Gavaskar, who was on air at the time, was clearly agitated. His immediate reaction was blunt:
"Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!”
“He should not be going into that (India’s) dressing room - he should be going into the other dressing room!”
India In Deep Trouble In MCG Test
The dismissal took place during the 56th over of India's first innings when Pant was batting alongside Ravindra Jadeja. Australian captain Pat Cummins made a key move by bringing in Scott Boland, and the decision proved to be a masterstroke. Boland’s delivery caught Pant off guard, and his poor shot selection led to his downfall.
India's struggle continued after Pant’s departure, as Jadeja was also dismissed shortly after, this time by Nathan Lyon. With the seventh wicket falling, India found themselves in deep trouble, and Australia continued to tighten their grip on the match.
