CSK head coach Stephen Fleming admitted that a missed DRS moment involving Dewald Brevis turned out to be a crucial point in the match. CSK lost by just 2 runs to RCB, and the incident happened during the final stages of their chase.

What Happened?

The drama unfolded in the 17th over of CSK’s innings while chasing a big target of 214. Ngidi bowled a full toss that hit Dewald Brevis on the pads. The umpire immediately gave him out LBW. As per the rules, once the batter is given out, the ball becomes dead, and a 15-second countdown begins for the batter to take a review.

But Brevis and Jadeja didn’t realise that. They ran for a single, assuming the ball had gone to the boundary. Meanwhile, the fielding team made a direct hit at the non-striker’s end. After a quick chat with Jadeja, Brevis tried to go for the review but by then, the 15 seconds had already passed.

The umpires, Nitin Menon and Mohit Krishnadas, refused the review. Brevis looked confused and upset, and after a small argument, had no choice but to walk off the field for a golden duck.

Fleming’s Take On The Controversy

Speaking after the match, Stephen Fleming said,

"Yeah, it was a big moment. In talking to Jaddu and Brevis, there was a lot going on with running straight away. I think they saw the ball ricochet and actually went to the boundary for four. And lost in that was whether Brevis took the review in time. I don't know the answer to that. He wasn't sure, given that they were running at the time."

Fleming further explained,

"As soon as you're given out, I understand the timer starts. There was a fair bit eaten up with the play still being completed, and whether they just ran out of time... in the umpire's view, it did. The other part about it, because he was given out, we wouldn't have got the runs. While we would have maintained the wicket, it certainly wouldn't have given us the five runs, which would have been nice. But it's a big moment in a big game.”

Adding to CSK’s heartbreak, replays later showed that the ball was actually missing the stumps. If Brevis had taken the review in time, he would’ve been not out, and CSK’s chase could have stayed alive with some momentum.

RCB posted a mammoth total of 213/5, thanks to a brilliant 53 runs knock by Romario Shepherd, along with debutant Jacob Bethell’s 62 and Kohli’s 55. In reply, CSK gave a tough fight. Ayush Mhatre smashed 94, while Jadeja stayed unbeaten on 77. But they fell just short, ending at 211/6.

RCB are now at the top of the table with 8 wins in 11 matches. Meanwhile, CSK suffered their fifth straight loss and continue to sit at the bottom.
