The Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 is all set to start on 22nd of November at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The Test series is crucial for both teams and India almost need a 4-0 or 5-0 win to make it to the WTC final. The BGT is always a high-profile series, but this extra pressure of qualifying for WTC adds another dimension to the series, and it promises to be quite an enthralling one.
There are plenty of predictions going around the series, and now Ricky Ponting has also come up with his bold predictions. He has backed Australia to win the series 3-1 while he has named Steve Smith and Rishabh Pant as two candidates to become the leading run-scorer of the series.
Ricky Ponting Backs Steve Smith And Rishabh Pant
Ponting said that getting back to the number 4 position will help Steve Smith in the series and he would be itching to prove a point. He also backed Rishabh Pant to score lot of runs as he would be coming in the middle order after the ball has lost some shine and with the form he displayed in the last couple of series, Ponting feels that he would be among the top run-scorers.
“Leading run scorer, I'm going to go - Steve Smith or Rishabh Pant. “I think Smith, the fact that he's moved back down from opener to No.4 probably makes it feel like he's got more of a point to prove…that maybe he shouldn't have gone up to open in the first place and that No.4 is his spot and where he should have probably been the whole time and where he probably finished his career now.”
“And with Rishabh back in the side and probably coming into bat in the middle order when the ball's probably lost a bit of its shine and a bit of its hardness and the form that he's in, I'll go for him as one of the leading run scorers as well.”
India have won their last two series against Kangaroos in Australia. However, with Mohammed Shami not part of the squad, and India recently suffering a whitewash at home, Aussies are favourites to win the the BGT this time around.
