Brash young Australian opener Sam Konstas made an impressive debut fifty against India on Day 1 of the ‘Boxing Day’ Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Opening the innings with senior partner Usman Khawaja, the 19-year-old launched six boundaries and a couple of audacious sixes to whack 60 from just 65 balls before failing to read one from Ravindra Jadeja.

Konstas, who averages 42.23 in Shield Cricket for Australia, was earlier drafted into the playing XI for the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series as a replacement for struggling Nathan McSweeney.

Konstas picks Kohli as his favorite, shrugs off fight

While speaking with 7Cricket, Australia’s prodigious batting talent Sam Konstas named Virat Kohli as his favorite Indian cricketer. When asked to give his pick in a candid interview, he said:

“Virat Kohli, what he does is truly remarkable.”

Moreover, while speaking with the network at the MCG on Day 1 after his dismissal, the youngster even acknowledged the legendary Indian batter as his favorite cricketer in the world.

As it turned out, Virat Kohli gave Sam Konstas a hostile welcome on the field on the first morning of the MCG Test. The legendary Indian batter gave Konstas a shoulder nudge after the latter had a brief verbal exchange with visiting fast bowler Mohammed Siraj.

Even though the two cricketers exchanged a silent stare, Sam Konstas was willing to let go of their altercation. While speaking with Trent Cooperland near the boundary line shortly after his dismissal to Ravindra Jadeja, the 19-year-old said:

“The emotions got to both of us. It happens, its cricket.”

Sam Konstas’ splendid half-century at the top opened gateways for Australia to dictate terms with Jasprit Bumrah-led India’s new ball attack. The youngster shared an 89-run opening partnership with Usman Khawaja from just 19.2 overs, as Australia reached 112-1 by lunch. Khawaja also notched up his own half-century before he was dismissed by Bumrah at the halfway stage of the afternoon session.
