Tilak Varma was in great form during the IPL 2025 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Wankhede Stadium on April 8. The young left-handed batter had struggled in previous matches, but against RCB, he bounced back with a powerful knock, 56 runs off just 29 balls, including four fours and four sixes.
Soon after the match, Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya finally opened up about why Tilak was retired out earlier against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
What Hardik Said About Tilak’s Retirement
Hardik revealed that Tilak Varma had actually injured his finger a day before the match against LSG. So, it wasn’t just a strategy – it was partly due to that injury.
"Tilak was fantastic. Last game, a lot of things happened. People made a lot of things about it but people don't know that he had a very nasty hit previous day. It was a tactical call but because of the finger which he had, the coach just felt that that was a better option that someone fresh can come and do it," Hardik explained.
Despite Tilak’s great performance against RCB, Mumbai Indians couldn’t cross the finish line. They lost the match by 12 runs, making it their fourth loss this season. So far, they’ve won just one match.
RCB, on the other hand, had a special moment. They defeated Mumbai Indians at Wankhede after 10 years, making it their fourth win of the season. So far, they’ve only lost one match in IPL 2025.
