Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar emphasised the significance of India's recent victory over New Zealand at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala during the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023

India's triumph over New Zealand, securing a four-wicket win, propelled them to the top of the tournament's points table.

In a post-match conversation with Star Sports, Gavaskar acknowledged the pivotal nature of the match and India's ability to excel under pressure.

He commended Virat Kohli for his calm and confident approach, highlighting that this composure would be valuable in future high-pressure scenarios with more demanding run rates.

"This was a very important situation from which to come through. And Kohli ensured that calmness which is tremendous, which gives you confidence if a similar situation occurs with a more demanding asking rate, as he will still be able to deliver,"  Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports.

Gavaskar also praised both Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja for their roles in steering the Indian team out of a challenging situation. When India was at 200 runs with an additional 60-70 runs required, the game was finely balanced.

However, the ex-cricketer recognised the temperament of Virat Kohli, often referred to as the "chase master," and appreciated Jadeja's performance, which he found heartening for all Indians.

"At 200, with 60-70 runs still needed, it was a bit difficult. But you know, the temperament of Virat Kohli, chase master, was there. But for Jadeja to come in and the way he played was really heartening for all the Indians,"  he added.

In the match, New Zealand batted first and posted a total of 273 runs, primarily fueled by Daryll Mitchell's brilliant century. This remarkable innings made Mitchell the first New Zealand batters to score a hundred against India in an ODI World Cup in 48 years.

On the bowling front, Mohammed Shami was the standout performer, securing a five-wicket haul.

In response, Kohli contributed significantly with a brilliant knock of 95 runs, while captain Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja also played essential roles, scoring 46 and 39 runs, respectively. Their efforts led India to secure their fifth consecutive victory in the 2023 World Cup.
