Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 14-year-old cricket sensation who stunned the world with his record-breaking century in IPL 2024, has now declared his admiration for a new role model in Indian cricket and it's not Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. The young batting prodigy from Bihar, currently touring England with the India U-19 team, has named Shubman Gill as his inspiration.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Looks Up To Shubman Gill
Suryavanshi, who rose to fame playing for Rajasthan Royals, made headlines when he smashed the fastest century by an Indian in IPL history earlier this year. Despite his tender age, his mature approach and fearless batting style have already earned comparisons with some of the greats of the game.
But during the 2nd Test at Edgbaston, Suryavanshi was spotted but in the stands as he witnessed one of the greatest overseas Test innings, played by Shubman Gill.
"I am feeling very good. This is my first Test in England and I am seeing how the game is going. We all came to watch the match. We got a lot of inspiration. Shubman Gill is a role model for us. Everyone’s dream is to play red-ball cricket for their country,” said Suryavanshi in a video shared by the BCCI.
Promising young batter Vaibhav is also making headlines with a string of impressive performances for the India U19 team in their ongoing five-match series against the England Lions. The talented southpaw has amassed a total of 179 runs in the first three matches.
His contributions have been vital in India's competitive showings so far, with one of his innings crossing the fifty-run mark. With two matches remaining in the series, all eyes will be on Vaibhav to continue his fine form and help India U19 close the tour on a high.
Gill's 269: A Knock For The Ages
Shubman Gill’s breathtaking 269-run innings powered India to a commanding total of 578, turning the match on its head and rewriting the record books. His innings is now the highest ever by an Indian Test captain.
The newly appointed Test captain became the first Indian to score 150+ in England since Rahul Dravid's 217 at The Oval in 2002. He also surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 to register the highest individual score by an Indian in England. The star batter also became the second-youngest Indian captain to score a double century.
