After many speculations ate into the retirement rumour of Usman Khawaja, it has now been circulated that the Australian batter is set for the big reveal on his Test future ahead of the Sydney Test. The 39-year-old has been the crux of Australia’s top-order attack in Test cricket for many years now, and rumours are swirling that Khawaja is set for the farewell at SCG.
Many cricket legends like Michael Vaughan believes Khawaja should retire on his own terms and not leave his career decisions in the hands of the management by not appearing for the final Ashes Test. Parallelly, Australia cricket legend Michael Clarke believes Sydney will be Usman’s adieu to Test cricket.
Michael Clarke believes Usman Khawaja will play at the SCG
Speaking to the Herald Sun, Michael Clarke seemed confident with Usman Khawaja’s departure from the format in the final Ashes Test. While he was fixated on his retirement, Clarke stressed that Khawaja will be getting a place in the SCG at No. 5 or No. 6.
“I think Sydney would be Usman Khawaja’s farewell Test match. If I picked him for Melbourne, I would pick him for Sydney as well. But I think he will retire after the Test match and Australia wins the series. Hopefully, he goes out with a big score. I hope Uzz gets a big score at the SCG end walk away on a high,” Clarke told the Herald Sun.
Why Usman Khawaja’s retirement speculations are buzzing?
The discussion around Usman Khawaja's future revolves around the growing interest of Cricket Australia in rebuilding an ageing squad, somewhat parallel to the recently revealed T20 World Cup 2026 squad which boasts a lot of fresh faces in the mix.
Notably, Usman Khawaja’s career in Test cricket spans around 14 years, with the batter having 6,206 runs from 157 innings while averaging at 43.39. Since his debut, he has proved his worth as an opener and at the No. 3 slot.
However, Australia’s rebuild with Jake Weatherald and Travis Head at the top amid some back issues of Khawaja, shifted his place down the order where he performed in his hot and cold form.
