Usman Khawaja remains short of full fitness just days before the second Ashes Test at the Gabba. But the veteran opener is doing everything he can to be ready for the big match.

After suffering back spasms in the first Test in Perth, Khawaja returned to batting for the first time on Monday, showing both determination and discomfort during a closely monitored training session in Brisbane.

According to Cricket.com.au, the 38-year-old went through light running drills on the outfield before spending around half an hour in the nets.

Facing throw-downs from assistant coach Michael Di Venuto, Usman Khawaja played a number of crisp shots, including some trademark pull shots.

However, there were moments when he grimaced in pain, especially after attempting more expansive strokes.

Despite that, Khawaja moved fairly well between deliveries and was quick enough to evade a sharp bouncer, a small but encouraging sign that his back is improving.

What stood out was Khawaja’s eagerness to continue. Even after team doctors appeared to suggest he should stop, he chose to bat for another 10 minutes.

That being said, Australia’s medical and coaching staff are not rushing into a decision. They will continue to monitor him over the next couple of days, with another strong training session expected to play a key role in his selection.

If Usman Khawaja is not passed fit, Beau Webster and Josh Inglis are the backup options, with Inglis even showing his ability to open the innings after scoring a century in a recent warm-up match.

What went wrong with Usman Khawaja in the Perth Test?

In the opening Ashes 2025 Test at Perth, Usman Khawaja was disallowed to open in the first inning after he spent extra time off the field. He then batted at no. 4 and scored just 2 runs.

Then again, in the second inning, Khawaja didn’t walk to open due to a back spasm, and Travis Head smashed a 123-run knock as a backup opener.
