'Trophy For Which..': 'Hurt' Shami Condemns Mitchell Marsh's Feet On Trophy Gesture

Mohammad Shami expressed his disappointment and hurt at seeing Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh put his feet up on the ICC World Cup 2023 trophy on Sunday (November 19).

As the Aussies were crowned six-time champions, their top-order aggressor was seen holding his feet on top of the World Cup trophy in a viral pic taken inside the changing room.

The image had Marsh implying that the Aussies had their feet and absolute dominance over world cricket but it didn't go down well with the experienced Indian seamer, who told the reporters "I am hurt" by the gesture from the opposition camp.

For Shami, it was a case of Marsh disrespecting the trophy for which the Indian players and the rest of the teams had given immense sweat and hardwork on the cricket field over the past six weeks of high-octane cricket.

Speaking to the reporters following his return home after the sustained grind of the World Cup campaign, where he was one of the heroes of India's great juggernaut with 24 scalps in just six matches, Shami said he wasn't one bit amused by the gesture from Marsh.

"I am hurt. The trophy for which all the teams in the world fight, the trophy which you want to lift over your head, keeping a foot on that trophy did not make me happy," Shami said.

The veteran seamer, who usually shies away from media interactions, recently caught up with 'PUMA' and also revealed how he dealt with his absence from the first four matches of the World Cup and why he doesn't believe in assessing the nature of the surfaces before the play starts.

"Generally, bowlers check the pitch after arriving at the ground. I never go close to the wicket because you will know how it behaves only when you bowl on it," he said. "Then why take the pressure? It's best to keep it simple, keep yourself relaxed, and only then you will perform better."

"When you sit out for four matches, you need to be mentally strong. Sometimes you are under pressure but when you see the team performing well and going in a good direction, it gives you satisfaction," Shami added.
