Mumbai Indians (MI) recently named Hardik Pandya as their new captain, replacing the iconic Rohit Sharma. The decision sparked a flurry of reactions from fans and cricket enthusiasts alike. Former South African captain AB de Villiers, known for his insightful perspective, shared his thoughts on the matter through his YouTube channel.

De Villiers acknowledged the diverse reactions to the change in leadership, pointing out the emotional attachment some fans had developed with Rohit Sharma during his decade-long stint as captain. Reports even surfaced suggesting a significant drop in MI's social media following after the announcement.

Here's what de Villiers said

"I think there are a lot of people happy about it, a lot of people upset about it. I read a post that said Mumbai Indians' social platform lost like 1 million followers. I am not sure how accurate that is but obviously some people took it a bit personally with Rohit having to move on and make place for Hardik."

AB de Villiers further remarked,

"I don't think it is a bad move for Mumbai Indians. (It's) something new. Rohit has had fantastic success over the years, winning a lot of trophies. Maybe being the captain for India puts a lot of pressure on him as well. Now it's maybe just time for him to settle a bit and play and enjoy the game and give the pressure to someone else."

The transition marks the end of an era for Rohit Sharma's captaincy, spanning an impressive 11 seasons and overseeing MI's emergence as one of the IPL's most formidable teams.
