Pakistan cricketer Sarfaraz Ahmed has shared the story behind his son’s iconic photo with former Indian captain MS Dhoni ahead of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final. While speaking with Cricket Pakistan, Sarfaraz also signified the mutual respect shared by players from both teams.
It is worth noting that under the leadership of Sarfaraz Ahmed, the Pakistan cricket team flayed a star-studded Indian line-up in the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy at The Oval.
Sarfaraz Ahmed recalls a friendly MS Dhoni gesture
Sarfaraz Ahmed recalled how a picture of his then three-month old son Abdullah alongside MS Dhoni went viral in the days leading up to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final. As quoted by the Indian Express, the former Pakistan captain said that he had family and friends visiting in England at the time, when then Indian wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni happened to come downstairs.
“The moment happened when his family friends were visiting, and Dhoni happened to come downstairs. He thought it would be a perfect opportunity to capture the moment with his three-month-old son.”
Sarfaraz Ahmed also recalled that MS Dhoni asked about whose child he was holding, to which the then Pakistani skipper responded:
“This is my son.”
Playing down the intense rivalry between the two nations, Sarfaraz Ahmed stated that players from India and Pakistan share mutual respect as they often sit and chat together before or after their high-profile matches. He said:
“Whenever Indian and Pakistani players meet, there is always mutual respect and friendship, after matches it’s not uncommon to see players like Shoaib Malik, Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and others sitting together, chatting and enjoying each other’s company.”
India and Pakistan teams are once again prepping themselves to face each other, this time for a Group A game in the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The match will be hosted by the Dubai International Stadium on February 23.
