England's most influential all-rounder in the past decade, Ben Stokes, made a surprise return to One-Day International (ODI) cricket, coming out of retirement, to feature in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

The Test skipper showcased his calibre against New Zealand, slamming a blistering 182m, which included 15 fours and nine sixes, proving his mettle further. However, Stokes' return was not appreciated by former Australian Test captain Tim Paine, who called the all-rounder's decision 'selfish'.

Now, ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023 in India next month, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player has hit back at Paine and other critics.

Speaking to The Guardian, the 32-year-old stated that he understands what 'Selfish' means and does not give in to all the chatter outside.

Here's what Stokes said

"Selfish? I’d like to think I’ve played enough for people to know that is not a word that applies to me. I had to see how I felt after the Ashes. And I was cooked, taking naps for days after it. But once I thought about the World Cup, potentially defending it, it was simple. It was good to tell Jos. He doesn’t give much away but he was buzzing."

Stokes, along with other members of England's World Cup 2023 squad, have departed for India today and will play their opening match against New Zealand on October 5.
