Senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been appointed as India’s vice-captain for the two-match home Test series against the visiting West Indies team. Apparently, the 36-year-old was unaware of any such development, and was taken aback over his sudden ascension and the gesture of the team management.

Ravindra Jadeja was appointed as Shubman Gill’s deputy after blistering wicketkeeper-batter and regular vice-captain Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the series owing to the foot injury he sustained in England a couple of months ago.

Ravindra Jadeja describes “special” feeling as vice-captain

In an interview with the BCCI.tv as shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on their official social media platforms, Ravindra Jadeja admitted that he was taken aback with the team management’s sudden decision of appointing him as team’s new vice-captain.

The legendary all-rounder added that while he was left surprised, he was also “happy” to see his name beside the word “Vice-captain” on the team sheet. He acknowledged the team management’s gesture and the faith of his captain and coach. Ravindra Jadeja said:

“They didn’t say anything to me. They just announced the team and I saw that besides my name the VC is written, so I was very happy. And as a player, you always gain confidence whenever you see some kind of gesture from the management, captain and coach. At the end of the day, you are always happy to do good and share your experience with the team.”

Ravindra Jadeja added:

“It’s very special for me as a player. They gave me respect because the management, captain, and coach have decided to give me some extra responsibility. I am very happy to do it and whenever the team needed my experience and needed me to say anything regarding planning, I am always happy to do it.”

Ravindra Jadeja, a veteran of 85 Test caps, recently enjoyed a prolific series with the bat in England, minting five fifties and a century as India levelled the five-match rubber 2-2.

Jadeja started off his vice-captaincy gig on Thursday, October 2 on Day 1 of the first Test against West Indies at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
