Ace Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane was suspended by Cricket Nepal from the final two T20Is of the three-match series against West Indies in the UAE last month. A recent report indicates that Cricket Nepal imposed the ban on the 25-year-old over a disciplinary breach.

It is worth noting that Lamichhane was not part of the Nepal playing XI in any of the three games against the West Indies, despite being part of the travelling squad in Sharjah.

Sandeep Lamichhane’s late withdrawal led to his suspension

Nepal leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane withdrew himself from the playing XI of the series-opening first T20I against the West Indies, just 15 minutes prior to the scheduled toss time at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. As per the team management and as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, Lamichhane pulled himself out because he was not in a “good space” to play the match.

Nonetheless, Cricket Nepal subsequently advised the Nepal team management to bench Sandeep Lamichhane from the remaining two games of the T20I series, citing his late withdrawal had a “serious impact” on the team.

As it turned out, even in his absence, Nepal won the first two games to clinch the three-match series by a 2-1 margin, thus registering their first-ever series victory in any format of the game against a full-member nation.

The cricketer will now be expected to join the team for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia & EAP Qualifier in Oman. The Nepal team is placed in Group B of the tournament alongside Japan and Kuwait. The nine-team competition will determine three qualifiers for next year’s 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
