The captaincy debut can’t be better as Shubman Gill stunned the cricket world with his stunning performance in the recently ended Test series against England. Leading the side from the front, Gill raised his bat high and shattered the record book.
Finishing the series with 750+ runs, he is the highest run scorer of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik, in a recent interview, lauded Gill for his maturity and sharp cricketing mind.
Karthik Hails Gill’s Tactical Brilliance
After Shubman Gill took over Team India’s captaincy, questions were raised over his batting style due to his poor overseas record. Making his captaincy debut on English soil, Gill let his brilliance silence the doubts over his role. Despite being on the back foot, Team India showcased unmatchable grit and ended the series on a dramatic draw.
In the entire series, Gill’s aggressive captaincy grabbed the attention. Speaking to Cricbuzz, former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik praised his tactical skill in dealing with tough English conditions, applauding his composure and ability to thrive under pressure.
“He’s been aggressive at times; sometimes he did cross the line. I think he’ll change that about himself to an extent. I hope he doesn’t change it too much. But most importantly, the way he handled the English media [he did it very well],” he said.
“Walking into this series, people were asking - Shubman Gill, away from India, his record can be better. And he said, ‘I want to be the best batter across both teams’. It’s one thing to have confidence, but you’ve got to back that up with skill. He came prepared. There was a vulnerability in his batting [against] the ball coming back in. He found a way to work on his technique and counter it,” he added.
Karthik In Awe Of Batter Shubman Gill
Since his debut in the longer format, Shubman Gill has had his best Test series against England. Amassing 754 runs in five matches to finish as the top scorer, his peak came in the second Test, where he hammered 269 in the first innings, followed by 161 in the second, totaling a staggering 430 runs in that match. Dinesh Karthik credited Gill’s hunger for his outstanding performance.
“What was the defining part of what he achieved was the hunger and determination. That 269 and the hundred he got at Edgbaston, the amount of time he batted was astounding,” he added.
Once criticized for overseas performance, Gill silenced all doubts with his exceptional performance. After the series ended, the Indian Test captain is set to lead the North Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy.
