Shubman Gill’s name was all over the headlines after India’s historic Test series in England. The young captain had a dream run with the bat, scoring a jaw-dropping 754 runs in just 10 innings, including four centuries. However, according to Ajay Jadeja, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja showed more consistency.
Leading the team in Tests for the first time, Gill stepped up to fill the massive shoes left by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and did it in style. He made the second most runs in a series by an Indian batter and missed Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 774 runs by 21 runs.
Ajay Jadeja Says Ravindra Jadeja Was India’s True MVP In England
However, according to former cricketer Ajay Jadeja, Shubman Gill’s records overshadowed all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who beat the skipper in terms of consistency.
Talking on the Extraa Innings show on Sony Sports, the ex-cricketer said the all-rounder had a phenomenal series with the bat, scoring 516 runs at an astonishing average of 86.
In 10 innings, he registered five fifties and a century, remaining not out on four occasions. His numbers may be slightly lower than Gill’s in volume, but Jadeja’s steady contributions in pressure situations made him, in Ajay Jadeja’s words, “more consistent than even Shubman Gill.”
“Is anything required to be said? The man has shown you what he can do. I think outstanding. Shubman Gill has scored 754 runs, and you are saying that he has reached close to the best. He (Ravindra Jadeja) has scored nearly 550 runs. He has been more consistent than even Shubman Gill. He had four innings that didn’t end, because the batting ended from the other end."
"In the entire series, there were only two innings where he got out early. If we try to remember his moments, it started with Lord’s, where you couldn’t win for sure, but he and (Mohammed) Siraj fought there. A change was seen there. The fortitude started from there. Then he kept standing in the next match and drew the match. Then he scored runs in this match (last Test) as well."
The impact of Ravindra Jadeja’s batting was immense. In the second Test at Edgbaston, which India won, Jadeja scored twin fifties. His 107 at Old Trafford in the fourth Test was crucial in forcing a draw, while his twin fifties at Lord’s kept India in the hunt in a narrow loss. Even in the final Test at The Oval, his fifty laid the foundation for a famous win.
Ravindra Jadeja Scripts History With Consistent Batting
Interestingly, Ravindra Jadeja made history in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, becoming the first player in an India-England Test series to hit six 50-plus scores. His latest, a gritty 53 at The Oval, took him past 500 runs in the series, behind only Shubman Gill and KL Rahul.
Jadeja’s consistent batting kept India steady before Washington Sundar’s explosive fifty pushed the total to 396, setting England 374 to win. Jadeja’s feat breaks a 93-year record and cements his place as India’s most reliable all-rounder.
