On Tuesday, cricket fans across the globe witnessed history being unfolded as Glenn Maxwell pulled off a heist to ensure Australia's memorable win over Afghanistan in a tense World Cup clash in Mumbai. Batting first, Afghanistan posted a challenging total of 291 runs, courtesy of a fighting century by Ibrahim Zadran.

However, despite being 91 for seven at one stage, Australia got past the finish line with 19 balls to spare, as Maxwell slammed the highest-ever World Cup knock during a run chase.

Australian captain Pat Cummins, who stitched an iconic 202-run stand with Maxwell for the eighth wicket, seemed short of words while describing his knock.

Hailing Maxwell for his incredible effort, Cummins termed his knock the greatest thing to have ever happened on a cricket field while lauding the batter for his commitment to bat till the end despite battling cramps.

"I don't know how you describe this I mean great win, but Maxi is out of this world. It has got to be the greatest thing that has ever happened. One of those days people will say yeah, when that happened, I was here at the stadium and we feel very lucky to be here," said Cummins.

"We had two new South Welshmen coming in next. They were lining up, they wouldn't have missed a thing. But, yeah, I think Zamps was on and off about three times, but Maxie wanted to stay out there," he added.

With the memorable win, Australia qualified for the semifinals of the marquee event. Up next, they will take on Bangladesh in their final league-stage game in Pune on November 11.
